CASCADE biosensor found to be effective in naked-eye SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection.

In the present study, researchers designed the CASCADE biosensor for naked-eye detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA extracted from SARS-CoV-2-positive nasopharyngeal swabs using AuNPs. The Cas protein is of two types - Cas12 and Cas13. The trans-cleavage activity of Cas13 is multiple-turnover, and thus, the signals can be amplified using many unspecific nucleic acid oligonucleotides. Further, Cas13 does not require a protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) sequence. The incorporation of the Cas13 nuclease increased the versatility of the sensor.

Scientists have successfully tested in the lab a tiny biosensor they developed that can detect biomarkers tied to traumatic brain injuries. In a study published recently in the journal Small, the Ohio State University researchers say their waterproof biosensor includes an "unprecedented combination of features" that may allow it to detect changes in the concentrations of various chemicals in the body and send the results to researchers in real time. The chip is flexible and thinner than a human hair, making it minimally invasive for use in the brain.

2D MXene-Ti3C2T? has demonstrated promising application prospects in various fields; however, it fails to function properly in biosensor setups due to restacking and anodic oxidation problems. To expand beyond these existing limitations, an effective strategy to for modifying the MXene by covalently grafting first-generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimers onto an MXene in situ (MXene@PAMAM) was reported herein. When used as a conjugated template, the MXene not only preserved the high conductivity but also conferred a specific 2D architecture and large specific surface areas for anchoring PAMAM.
