All patients were opioid-naive within the 180 days prior to the index procedure, and filled an opioid prescription within 14 days after surgery. Persistent opioid use (>90 days after the procedure) occurred in 10.2% of patients undergoing bypass surgery and 8.1% of patients who had valve surgery. “We were surprised at the overall proportion of patients who had persistent opioid use after surgery,” Dr. Desai said. “Anecdotally, I would have thought the rate would have been slightly lower.” Developing persistent opioid use was more likely if patients were women; younger; had preoperative congestive heart failure, chronic lung disease, diabetes, kidney failure, chronic pain or alcoholism; or had been taking preoperative benzodiazepines or muscle relaxants. When asked about the use of technology, I always start with a somewhat simple definition: Technology refers to the skills, methods and processes used to achieve a specific goal. It is really the application of scientific knowledge for something that is practical and impact.
