Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) occurs when leg arteries become narrowed or blocked by plaque. These blockages can result in severe pain for patients, limited physical mobility, and life-threatening non-healing leg ulcers. According to the American Heart Association, this condition affects approximately 8 to 12 million Americans. With only about 25 percent of PAD patients undergoing treatment, it is a disease that is largely under-diagnosed and under-treated. If left untreated, PAD can lead to critical leg ischemia, a condition where not enough blood is being delivered to the leg to keep the tissue alive. Total loss of circulation to the legs and feet can cause gangrene and lead to amputation.

1.Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. 2.An estimated 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and stroke. 3.Over three quarters of CVD deaths take place in low- and middle-income countries. 4.Out of the 17 million premature deaths (under the age of 70) due to noncommunicable diseases in 2019, 38% were caused by CVDs. 5.Most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing behavioural risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and obesity, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol. 6.It is important to detect cardiovascular disease as early as possible so that management with counselling and medicines can begin.

SVS Develops Recommendations for Popliteal Artery Aneurysms

In a clinical practice guideline issued by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, recommendations are presented for the medical management of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs).
