Clinical Microbiology is a branch of medical science concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Moreover, this field of science cares about various clinical applications of microbes for the development of health. Immunology is a branch of biology that covers the study of immune systems in all organisms.

The vaccine is a biological preparation that enhances resistance to specific infection. Vaccination is the administration of a vaccine to assist the immune system to improve protection from a disease. Immunization is the process whereby an individual is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically by the administration of a vaccine. Vaccines stimulate the body's own immune system to protect the person against subsequent infection or disease.

Immunological disorders are the conditions caused by a dysfunction of the immune system including allergy, asthma, autoimmune diseases, and immunological deficiency syndromes. The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. The immune system keeps a record of every germ it had defeated so it can recognize and destroy the microbe quickly if it enters the body again.

A public health microbiologist contributes to the prevention of communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis, plague, diphtheria, rabies, foodborne illnesses and sexually transmitted diseases, by observing and researching the relationships between microorganisms, diseases and public health. The Public Health and Microbiology attentiveness includes studies and work particularly on the field of microbial pathogenesis, molecular genetics and epidemiology, values of public health, virology, and environmental and industrial microbial processes.

The Profession of Microbiology (POM) track is everybody's track. No matter what area of microbiology you work in and what stage in your career you're at, the topics covered in POM are things you can use right away in your own practice, from improving your communication and teaching skills to getting out in the community and being an advocate for the microbial sciences.
